You’ve decided you want to join a coworking space (great decision by the way) but how do you make sure you choose the right one? Consider the following before you take the next step of looking around potential spaces…
A major factor in choosing the perfect coworking space is, of course, how much you pay. With your budget in mind, examine the different options that flexible spaces offer. For example, some places will offer a daily, hot desk and permanent rates as well as the option of a private office, pod or more. When you take a tour, you’ll receive more information about what the price plans include, which leads us onto…
What does the space offer to make your day that bit lighter and brighter? For example, is the Wifi included, is there a printer and if so, what’s the cost of printing? Does the site have scanners, photocopiers and desk size options and, if necessary, are there onsite reception/admin services?
On a more ‘nice to have’ basis, you might want to know whether the kitchen stocks instant coffee or grinds their beans. Lots of coworking spaces provide kitchens and utensils so that you can bring in your food. Some, like Evolve, also have a shower – perfect if you like to cycle into work, take part in one of the yoga classes or go to the gym at lunchtime.
Other amenities that you might find in spaces include exercise classes, meeting and function rooms, onsite cafes and coffee shops. Don’t underestimate how the little things go a long way to making a workspace that bit more enjoyable (and less like work).
Ask any real estate agent, and they’ll tell you that location is king. The same applies when choosing your coworking space. On a business level, your address could be significant to future colleagues or clients in its proximity and its desirability. A space that’s close to your current colleagues or clients is also useful for practical reasons.
On a personal note, location is a factor when planning how to get to work. Are there public transport options? Can you park nearby? And, if so, for how much? Is it possible to cycle or walk?
Having shops and services on your doorstep is always handy and being so close to cafes, restaurants and bars (like at Evolve) means your friends will always want to meet you after work!
A sense of community
Getting your head around who is in the space and how it feels when you enter is important. By taking a tour, you’ll get a sense of the type of space - is it quiet, loud, friendly, bustly or dead? You need to pick one that suits your working style.
A sense of community is one of the many benefits of working in a shared space (click here for the Top 10 Benefits of Coworking). Are you looking for a place that hosts regular functions, events and weekly drinks? Or, are you looking for somewhere quiet where you can just put your head down and get on with your work? Either is fine, but make sure that your chosen space ticks the right box.
